What information do we collect?

If you visit the Space Hop website, we automatically gather and store the following information about your visit in so that we can track the use of our website in order to make improvements:

  • the IP address from which you access our website
  • the name of the domain from which you access the Internet (e.g. aol.com, if you are connecting from an America Online account)
  • the type of browser and operating system used to access our website
  • the date and time of your visit to the site
  • the pages, files, documents and links that you visit
  • the internet address of the website from which you linked to our site (i.e. the previous site you visited before you came to us
What happens to the information collected?

The Space Hop Summer Reading Challenge will not make any attempt to identify individual users or their particular browsing activities. The information above is stored and used in the aggregate only, in order to provide us with information about the general use of our site. We analyse our log files in order to make improvements to the site: for example if we find that some pages are rarely or never visited, we may decide to remove or rewrite them.

What are cookies?

Cookies can be either persistent or session based. Persistent cookies are small pieces of information sent to your browser by a website that you visit. They are stored on your computer, contain an expiry date, and may be used to track your browsing behaviour upon return to the issuing web site. When you register on a website, cookies allow the website to remember your information so you will not have to re-enter it the next time you visit. You can set your browser to refuse cookies from any website you visit. If you choose to do that you can usually still gain access to most, if not all of the site, but you may not be able to conduct certain types of transactions (such as shopping) or take advantage of some of the interactive elements offered. Session cookies are short-lived, are used only during a browsing session, and expire when you quit your browser. Does the Space Hop website use cookies?

The Space Hop website uses session cookies to record progress throughout the visit to the website, e.g. keeping games scores.

Email addresses and personal information

There is an optional log in for the Space Hop website which allows visitors to keep track of their progress in the games. As part of the registration process, we ask children to submit first name, age, home town, and email address. On registration the website automatically assigns children a 'Space Hop mission name'. The email address will only be used to confirm the registration and to send a password reminder email on request. If children log in to the site, and choose to send in messages to the Blogs or the Message Board, their 'Space Hop mission name', age and home town details are displayed. None of the information collected on registration will be used by us apart from in aggregate, to provide us with information about the general use of our site. We will not pass any details on to any third parties.

Credits

Space Hop is the name for the 2010 national Summer Reading Challenge, which is run through the UK public library network and supported by leading children's publishers.

The Summer Reading Challenge is organised by The Reading Agency, an independent national charity working to encourage more people to read more. It is supported by the Arts Council England and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council

Space Hop House Rules
  1. This site is intended for people aged 11 and under.
  2. Stay safe – don't include any personal information in your messages. This includes your surname, email address, street address and phone number.
  3. Don't include the personal details of anyone else in your messages (including parents, guardians, teachers or group leaders).
  4. Don't post crude, racist, offensive, violent or vulgar messages to the site.
  5. Treat everyone with respect – even if someone has a different view to your own, don't let it get personal.
  6. Don't glamorise illegal or dangerous activities – it's OK to talk about what happens in a book, but don't encourage others to follow its example
  7. Don't write defamatory or libellous comments about anyone (including parents, guardians, teachers, social workers, group leaders and famous people).
  8. Don't write everything in CAPS – or stretch the text – it isn't easy for everyone to read.
  9. Don't post entire messages in text speak – it's OK to shorten some words but not everyone understands text speak or finds it quick to read.
  10. Don't post links to other websites – there's no way of controlling what these sites contain.
  11. Don't break copyright rules. This means you shouldn't post text from someone else's books

You must promise to stick to the 11 house rules. Every message is read and checked by moderators to make sure it is suitable. If you break any of the rules, your message will be rejected!
